The Role STEM Plays in Language Development in Kids
Among the numerous things that STEM does for children’s education is support language development. A child’s language and communication skills will impact their present and future.
Language development in kids occurs through the interactions they hear and those they are involved in. Babies learn how to communicate through interacting with their parents or hearing their parents interact with others. As they grow, they understand and hear even more. Even adults are in need of developing their communication skills, an inventor can sell the idea when he/she can explain and communicate its idea, the effect, and the function to the investors effectively to agree on making the device.
In order for their language to continue to develop, children need to have avenues through which to communicate- and to extend that communication into new areas. This is one way in which STEM really supports children’s education.
As children learn about science and other topics, they begin to formulate ideas and hypotheses. STEM education helps children communicate these to others as well as listen to other people’s ideas.
Through collaboration, students move into deeper and more thoughtful conversations and discussions, usually as a way to solve a problem together. This collaboration not only teaches them to work as a team even with people who may have differing views, but it also exposes them to other perspectives.
Additionally, it teaches them to speak in a persuasive manner. When they are discussing different ideas and solutions with other students, they must work to not only explain their ideas clearly but also do it in such a way that others might agree with their solution.
Through the exploration of STEM subjects, children are introduced to a whole new way of thinking. It extends their vocabulary, their understanding, and their perspective, all of which support communication and language development in kids.
