Tinker Club Ages 5-6 (Level 1)

Learn coding with Scratch Jr and hands-on science

  • 1 hour 45 minutes
  • 117 S Louise St, Glendale, CA 91205

Service Description

With 60 minutes of coding using Scratch Jr., and 45 minutes of hands-on science in each session, our classes are jam-packed with opportunities for every student to grow. The goal of this class is to introduce the fundamentals of coding; focusing on creating small animations and understanding the concept of sequencing, repetition, and timing the actions to run the code and follow instructions. At Level 2, there is a special emphasis on teamwork and critical thinking …, which are skills that can be a big challenge for students at this age. Each team of 4 to 6-year-olds learns to divide the steps of the project amongst themselves in order to complete the project in each session. As the children develop their understanding of the fundamentals of Scratch Jr. and their knowledge of basic scientific concepts, the sessions gradually introduce engineering projects. Now, they are tasked to solve real-life scenarios with everything they have learned from past classes. Some of the big science topics we cover are humanity’s impact on Earth and what technologies are designed to mitigate their negative effects, the properties of different materials and how they react with other substances, understanding the basics of physics and chemical reactions and learning about the senses and functions of the human body. With all this knowledge, the students use their new skills to solve problems, engineer solutions, and apply these concepts to everyday life.
