  • 1 hour 45 minutes
  • 117 S Louise St, Glendale, CA 91205

Service Description

Coding and computational thinking are a necessity for a 21st-century education, and it is crucial for kids to begin learning their fundamental principles of science, coding, and engineering from a young age in order to ensure success within our fast-paced technological society. Beginning with coding animations with characters to make small cartoons, students progress over the 12 sessions of the class to design computer games with their unique customized details and creativity. This class is broken down into 60 minutes of coding with Scratch, and 45 minutes of hands-on science and engineering in the second part of the class. Focusing on essential concepts such as force, and machines and developing prototypes to solve problems, our students are able to tackle real-world challenges and engineering topics. Some tasks include designing a recycling sorting device, constructing ramps to avoid freewheeling, working with electrical circuits, and creating magnetic toys. While they work and design, there is also a great emphasis on developing explanatory skills; often asking students to present their models in front of the class, and discuss them with other teams and students about their designs. Learning Goals: • Learn the basics of coding, developing animations, and small computer games. • Demonstrate teamwork and gradually get used to presenting in front of the class. • Learn about force, motion, simple machines, and human impacts on the Earth. • Comply with Next Generation Science Standards codes (NGSS) • K-2-ETS1 Engineering Design • 3-5-ETS1 Engineering Design • 4-PS3 Energy
